The Best Free Tools for Learning Almost Anything Online in 2026

We live in a strange moment: you can learn almost anything online, for free, and almost nobody does. The internet has made a world-class education available to anyone with a connection, and most of us use it to watch cat videos and argue with strangers.

I'm not here to judge. I've wasted plenty of time online too. But if you genuinely want to learn something new — coding, design, a language, photography, math — there has never been a better time to do it, and you don't need to spend a dime. These are the resources I've actually used and recommended to friends.

1. Khan Academy — The Gold Standard for Fundamentals

Khan Academy started as one guy tutoring his cousin online. It's grown into one of the best learning resources on the internet, and it's still 100% free. Math from kindergarten through university-level calculus, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, computer programming, history — all taught clearly, with practice problems and progress tracking.

If you feel like you never really understood a subject in school (especially math), go work through the relevant Khan Academy course. You'll be shocked at how much more sense it makes when it's explained well.

2. freeCodeCamp — Learn to Code for Real

freeCodeCamp is a non-profit that teaches web development, data science, Python, and related skills entirely for free. You learn by building actual projects — websites, apps, data visualizations — and you earn verifiable certificates. Tens of thousands of people have gotten real developer jobs after going through their curriculum, without paying for a single bootcamp.

If you've ever thought "I should learn to code," start here before you spend money on anything.

3. YouTube — The Most Underrated Learning Platform

YouTube gets dismissed as entertainment, but it's the largest free educational resource in human history. Whatever you want to learn, someone has made a high-quality video series teaching it for free. A few channels I use regularly:

  • Web Dev Simplified and The Net Ninja for web development
  • Kevin Stratvert for learning Excel, Word, and common software
  • 3Blue1Brown for beautiful, intuitive explanations of math
  • Kurzgesagt for science and big-picture ideas

Skip the clickbait "learn in one video!" content. Find a channel that teaches sequentially, and follow it.

4. Coursera (Audit Mode) — University Courses for Free

Coursera hosts real courses from real universities — Stanford, Yale, Google, and others. You can pay for certificates if you want them, but almost every course has an "audit" option that lets you watch all the lectures and read all the materials completely free. If you want the knowledge but not the piece of paper, audit mode is everything you need.

5. Duolingo + Anki — Language Learning That Works

Duolingo gets made fun of, and it won't make you fluent on its own, but it's genuinely the best free tool for building a daily language habit and learning basic vocabulary. Pair it with Anki, a free flashcard app that uses spaced repetition to make vocabulary stick, and you can get surprisingly far without paying a penny.

6. MIT OpenCourseWare and OpenStax

MIT publishes almost all of its actual course materials online for free — lecture notes, exams, problem sets, and often full video lectures. You can literally take an MIT education from your bedroom without enrolling. OpenStax provides free, peer-reviewed textbooks for almost every college subject, saving students hundreds of dollars each semester.

One Rule That Matters More Than Any Resource

The biggest mistake people make when they start learning online is collecting courses and never finishing anything. They have 12 tabs open, three courses bookmarked, a folder full of PDFs — and they never spend real time on any of it.

Pick one subject. Pick one resource. Commit 30 minutes a day for one month. That's it. Consistently showing up to one thing beats dabbling in twelve.

Knowledge has never been more available. The only cost is your attention and your willingness to show up.
